How to Choose and Work with Burls](https://troutlumber.com/blog/what-is-burl-wood-how-to-choose-and-work-with-burls): A burl is a rounded outgrowth on a tree's trunk or limb, packed with dormant buds and tangled grain. That chaotic grain gives burl wood its eye and swirl figure, and it is also what makes burl tricky: it can check as it dries, tear out under a planer, and soak up finish unevenly. Choose dry, sound pieces, stabilize cracks and voids, flatten with light cuts, scrape and sand rather than plane, and seal the wood before the final finish. - [How to Flatten a Live Edge Slab with a Router Sled](https://troutlumber.com/blog/how-to-flatten-a-live-edge-slab-with-a-router-sled): A router sled flattens a slab that is too wide for a planer by holding a router at a fixed height on two straight, coplanar rails. Shim the slab so it cannot rock, lock it in place, use a large surfacing bit in a 1/2-inch collet, take light passes of about 1/16 to 1/8 inch with overlapping strokes, then flip the slab onto its new flat face and repeat for two parallel sides. - [How to Care for and Finish Live Edge Slabs](https://troutlumber.com/blog/how-to-care-for-and-finish-live-edge-slabs): Finish live edge slabs on all faces (including underside and end grain), keep indoor relative humidity roughly in the mid-30s to mid-50s percent when you can, and choose a finish that matches how the piece will be used. Mount wide tops with hardware that allows cross-grain movement, and clean with mild methods matched to the finish system. - [How to Choose the Right Size Live Edge Slab for Your Project](https://troutlumber.com/blog/how-to-choose-live-edge-slab-size): Size a live edge project from the people and clearance you need, then read the slab’s usable width at its narrow working section—not only overall length. Plan about 24–28 inches of edge per seated person along a side, leave roughly 36–48 inches of walkway around dining tops, and filter inventory by length plus top/mid/bottom widths. - [Why Kiln-Dried Slabs Matter: Moisture, Movement and Stability](https://troutlumber.com/blog/why-kiln-dried-slabs-matter): Kiln drying brings thick slabs toward moisture contents commonly used for interior furniture—often discussed in the roughly 6–8% range for many heated homes—after air drying removes free water. That reduces the large, uneven shrinkage of green wood. Slabs still move with humidity, so acclimate, finish both faces, and mount for cross-grain movement. ## Visit / Contact Yard address: 120 Downer Rd, Sharon, VT 05065, United States (walk-in yard; hours coming soon).
